Beach 97 National Cup Champs

The Beach FC Girls 97 Academy Team defended it’s 2014 National Cup Championship by beating a familiar opponent in Carlsbad United FC 1-0 in last month’s final. Beach FC G97 Academy began it’s journey to repeat as National Cup Champions with three impressive wins in their pool.

They defeated California Rush 8-0, TFA IE Barca 8-0, and Hawks Academy 11-0. Beach matched up with Fullerton Rangers in the round of 16 where their goal scoring ways continued, winning the game 10-0. Beach’s quarter-final opponent was a very good LA Premier team, who battled for 90 minutes. Beach stayed true to their possession style of play, and scored the game winner in the 89th minute with a goal from Jessica Johnson.

The semi-final proved to be another close contest, with Beach going to overtime with Santa Barbara SC. Beach had most of the chances throughout the game and finally broke through in the first overtime on a goal from Rocio Rodriguez. In the final Carlsbad got out of the gates early, testing the Beach FC defense and goalkeeper Imani McDonald early in the game. Once the game settled down, Beach found their possession style and scored halfway into the first half through a goal from Kaitlin Fregulia.

The one goal was all it took as the defense tightened up and kept their shutout intact. Beach FC did not allow a goal the entire tournament, which spanned over 660 minutes of soccer. They had also scored a total of 40 goals in seven games! The seniors played in their last Cal South National Cup tournament, and during their four year high school career, never lost a single match in the tournament. Good luck to Beach FC Girls 97 Academy as they try to defend their National Championship in Tulsa this July.
