In late November, Beach FC compiled a 2-0-2 record in the first phase of group play in North Carolina. The defending national champions entered the final weekend of National League play in Las Vegas knowing that two wins would solidify their place in the USYS National Championships.
The team opened up play on Friday morning against a strong Tennessee SC side that was hungry to earn a spot in the National Championships as well. A pair of Kaitlin Fregulia goals within the first 15 minutes had the team sitting comfortable until Tennessee was able to pull a goal back before half. Rocio Rodriguez and Fregulia netted again after half to restore a comfortable advantage. Beach’s Maxine Nagramada extended the lead to 5-1 after drilling a first time half-volley inside the left post from 20 yards. Tennessee and Fregulia then traded goals to make it 6-2, before the side from Tennessee added one last consolation goal to round out a 6-3 score line.
Beach FC stepped into day two knowing that a win would send them back to the National Championships with a chance to defend their title. The opposition that stood in the way was MRM Coyotes from Maryland, who like Beach competed at last year’s National Championships. The first half was relatively even with neither team grasping a firm grasp on the game. This was until late in the first half when Kaitlin Fregulia was able to use her pace to latch onto a Tavia Leachman ball over the top and hammer home over the keeper to give the CalSouth side a 1-0 advantage. Beach FC stepped out in the second half and controlled the tempo with Savannah DeMelo poking home an opportunity in the 65th minute to secure the victory and send the team back to the National Championships.
The final day of competition saw the team square off against a familiar foe, Legends FC. Legends had a berth to the National Championships on the line, knowing that a win over Beach would send them through to Tulsa, Oklahoma. In a game filled with chances for both sides it was Beach that triumphed on the day with a 1-0 win. Savannah DeMelo provided a world class assist to Kaitlin Fregulia who tucked it below the keeper to secure a perfect weekend for the Beach FC side.
Beach FC Academy GU17 took home the National League Red Division crown. The National League is a competition for the nation’s top teams. The league is separated into a Red and Blue Division, with the top two in each division earning a berth to the US Youth Soccer National Championships. This year’s USYS National Championships will be held in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on July 21-26, 2015.
