Congratulations to Beach FC G05 Perez for capturing the top-flight title at the 2017 San Diego Surf Cup!
Even before the August 5–7 tournament, G05 Perez had an amazing year together with titles in US Youth Soccer Region IV Championship (National Series), Southern California Developmental Soccer League (SCDSL), California Regional League (CRL), and Blues Cup.
Surf Cup would present a special challenge to the girls.
The tournament was started over 30 years ago, and has grown into a significant competition featuring US Development Academy, ECNL, and other elite squads from around the country.
Beach FC G05 Perez registered for the Super Black bracket, which is the top flight of the age group.
They began their run on Saturday, August 5 with a 4–2 victory over Heat FC 05 RM ECNL (Nevada). That afternoon, they tallied a 3–1 win over LA Galaxy South Bay 2005 Pre-Academy, ranked #6 in the nation by YouthSoccerRankings.us.
On Sunday afternoon, they earned a tough 2–1 victory over D’Feeters 05 ECNL (Texas), ranked #12 in the nation.
Monday morning’s semifinal pitted Beach FC G05 Perez against #8-ranked So Cal Blues 05 Pre-Academy Draluck. A resounding 4–2 victory sent the girls into the finals.
Beach FC’s opponent was San Diego Surf SC 2005 EGSL, ranked #2 in the nation, #1 in Cal South and #1 in Region IV going into the match. Both teams created great chances and were unlucky not to break through. The match ended scoreless and went to PKs, where Beach FC G05 Perez kept their composure and emerged as champions. In addition to the tournament title, the team captured the #1 GotSoccer.com ranking in Cal South, and currently sits #7 in the nation on YouthSoccerRankings.us.

Beach FC G05 Perez is anchored by fearless, technical goalkeepers and an aggressive backline that is also comfortable enough on the ball to initiate build-up and possession. The midfield is balanced and calm in possession and active off the ball, supporting a lethal forward line that pounces on chances and produced the tournament’s top scorer in Onyeka Gamero.
The girls finished with 13 goals scored, 5 allowed, some beautiful hardware for the trophy cabinet, and memories that will live long.
Congratulations to the players — Isa Cilloniz, Reese Doherty, Lailah Downs, Onyeka Gamero, Emily Gordillo, Lenea Guerrero, Shae Harvey, Jaelyn Holly, Skye Johnson, Alexa Lara, Mia Leon, Samantha Moses, Kaylee Noble, Alexis Norberg, Emily Protiva, Avery Stevens, Sierra Sythe, Kiara Van Deusen, and Eleanor Yamada — the parents, and Coach Rich Perez and Asst Coach Jose Gordillo for another championship.
